Numerous restoration efforts have been undertaken by both state authorities and private organizations. A Venice in Peril Fund was established in 1971 as the successor to various bodies formed to collect money for restoration after the floods of 1966.
Most remarkable perhaps is the painstaking care and attention taken with restoration. Among the art works and buildings to have benefitted are the [G 03 / Basilica] di San Marco's central door, the facade of the Palazzo Ducale, the churches of Santi Giovanni e Paolo and Santa Maria Mater Domini, and Carpaccio's paintings of the Legend of St Ursula. The synagogues in the Ghetto have also been restored and the restoration of the island of St Giorgio Maggiore is considered to be among Venice's major restoration achievements.
